For the past 19 years, McHappy Day has been doing what it does best: making children happy.

This year, Mayor Jeff Lehman has declared May 2 to be McHappy Day in Barrie.

For every Big Mac, Happy Meal and McCafe sold, a loonie will be donated to the Ronald McDonald Houses located around the world to help families live in a comfortable environment while their children who are suffering from illnesses attend their medical treatments at nearby hospitals.

For parents of critically ill newborns, the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Credit Valley Hospital (CVH) offers a place that feels a little like home in the midst of a busy neonatal care unit.

Taking a stand is not an easy thing to do, and this is exactly what was discussed amongst Grades 4-8 students this month in Language.  First, students read about different individuals who have taken a stand throughout history, and who spoke out publicly promoting a cause they believed in.

Learning about fractions might just be one of the toughest math concepts in the Ontario Curriculum, and with our multi-grade class there are lots of different aspects of fractions to cover in our math sessions. 

We are happy to report, however, that our Grades 4-9 students seem to have made some major breakthroughs over the past while.  With the use of fraction games, like our Fraction Pizza game, and various classroom manipulatives, they are exploring new ways to visualize and work with these numbers.

To finish up our study of Energy, all students travelled to the Ontario Science Centre.  Students from JK, Grades 1, 2, 6, 9, 10 and 11 all found something that they enjoyed the most.  We started in the Living Earth Gallery and had a blast going across the rickety wooden bridge in the rainforest.  Next, it was on to the Science Arcade.  Highlights of this area included the cave, creating our own tornadoes, the slanted house and experimenting with sound in the music areas.  After lunch, we split into two groups.  Grade 3 and under students visited KidSpark where

One-year-old McKayla Warder's wait for a heart transplant has come to an end.

Her parents, Rejeanne and Justin, were told by doctors Thursday the youngest of their four children has been taken off the transplant list after she showed no signs of improvement since suffering a stroke last winter.

Doctors will instead perform a risky heart surgery early next year.

"At first we were angry and upset because we thought that was our last chance," Justin said.

Harper said the Conservatives have encouraged private philanthropy.

The federal government paid for nearly a third of the $33-million facility on McCaul Street, which opened to families with sick children in November.

Ronald McDonald House Toronto hosted a "Holiday Chic: Home for the Holidays" gala on Thursday night at the Carlu. The fund-raiser attracted 378 guests and was the first event for the new house that opened on November 18. Decor, while festive, was elegant and elevated. "It had to be chic," said Kathleen Nakonechny, associate at McNabb Roick Events.
 
The party theme played off of a Ronald McDonald House fund-raiser last summer, which had a "Construction Chic" theme to reflect its building mode.

Having outgrown Toronto's original Ronald McDonald House on Gerrard St. and turning away 70% of requests, the new home at 240 McCaul St. will provide housing for three times the number of parents and children in need, with 96 bedrooms to accommodate 81 families per night.  The Gerrard home--which opened in 1981 -- used to house 28 families per night.

By examining the lyrics of one of their favourite songs, students will attempt to pick out various poetic devices they have learned about in class. We enjoyed doing a whole class activity to prepare for this assignment, taking apart Katy Perry's "Fireworks." Who knew metaphors, similes, alliteration and onomatopoeia could be found throughout this inspiring song!

RMH Toronto School finished off their first month with a field trip to the Royal Ontario Museum.

Highlights included the bat cave, digging for dinosaur bones and the impressive gemstone gallery. Everyone enjoyed picking out their favourite jewels and taking pictures of rare minerals. Some of us also got a glimpse of the queen bee in the hands-on biodiversity gallery. For anyone who has been to the ROM, you will understand how lucky we were to see this sight.
