School Update - July 2012
Fairy Tales and Medieval Times
All students explored fairy tales and medieval times this month. Students explored a variety of fractured fairy tales, and took a particular interest in “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” by John Scieska. We had a lot of fun using our costumes/props and our very active imaginations to transform our classroom into castles and knight training facilities. Students learned about life in medieval times, and participated in various activities, such as creating their own coat of arms, and learning about castle life, music and dance of the time period. Students also enjoyed our class field trip to Medieval Times, where we were able to watch an entertaining performance, and cheer on the Yellow Knight! During our final week at school, students participated in knight training where they completed a variety of tasks to prove their devotion to our make believe kingdom. Students took these tasks very seriously and were pleased to be addressed as Sirs and Ladies, once the knighting ceremony was complete.
Age Specific Sessions
June was very busy for students in their age specific sessions. Primary students enjoyed reading and writing activities about Jack and The Beanstalk, and explored elements of drama in creating role plays. Students focused on reading and learning sight words this month, and it was a pleasure to see their improvement in reading skills. Primary students also participated in various counting and adding activities, and especially enjoyed playing a fun addition board game.
Our intermediate students worked very hard to complete various culminating tasks for language arts, art and music. They also chose their favourite math concepts to spend the final weeks reviewing, and enjoyed competing against one another in games such as Order of Operations Bingo, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire; Fractions Edition.
Secondary students worked right to the end the school year by studying for exams, and completing credits. Some students wrote exams for the first time, and so they also spent time in the final weeks of class learning effective study skills. To check out the variety of work that has been completed, go to our art gallery.
Wrapping up the School Year
It is hard to believe our first school year at our new RMH Toronto location has come to an end. The month of June was a very busy time for the students. Not only were they working to complete various culminating tasks, but students also spent a lot of time preparing for our end of year concert. During our Concert and Awards Ceremony, Intermediate students presented their media literacy assignment in PowerPoint format on fashion designing. They also presented a variety of songs on the recorder, including a very challenging duet. Our primary students enjoyed singing various fairy tales songs to the parents, and all students presented and taught a Medieval Times dance to families and staff. Following the school fair, each student was presented with a special award in an area they excelled in this term. An example of some awards presented included the Leadership Award, and Overall Achievement. We ended off the school year with a “fun day” for the students where they each chose their favourite activity from the term to participate in. Students chose to go to the gym, play board games, have treats, and listen to music. It was a great way to spend our last day together, and say our goodbyes.
