School Update - July 2013
Fairy Tales and Medieval Times
Our Social Studies unit for the month of June was Fairy Tales and Medieval Times. Students brainstormed what they knew about fairy tales, speaking about books, movies, and modern day princes and princesses. The students shared their favourite fairy tales with each other. All students learned and compared various versions of Cinderella. We continued on to learn about Medieval Times. Students researched the daily life of a knight as well as participated in various activities, such as creating their own coat of arms, and learning about castle life and dances of the time period. Students also enjoyed our class field trip to Medieval Times, where we were able to watch an entertaining performance, and cheer on the Green Knight! During our final week at school, students participated in knight training during which they completed a variety of tasks proving that they are creative, fair, loyal, and intelligent people of our classroom kingdom. All students completed the tasks and were knighted in a most wonderful ceremony. Congratulations to all of our newly knighted RMH Toronto School knights!!
Age Specific Sessions
June was very busy for students in their age specific sessions. Primary students had fun reading and dramatizing Jack and the Beanstalk. The students took a particular liking to the Fee Fi Fo Fum! Chant. We explored the characters, setting and plot of The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. The students also watched modern day versions of these fairy tales and completed Venn diagrams to point out the similarities and differences of the stories. In math, Primary students participated in various counting and adding activities, and especially enjoyed playing a fun addition board game.
Our Junior/Intermediate students worked very hard to complete various culminating tasks for Language Arts and Math. They completed an author/novel study and presented creative assignments such as soundtracks and movies depicting parts of their novels. In math, students did a million dollar project. They pretended they were millionaires and went on shopping sprees. Some of the ideas were to collect movie collectibles, buy houses, and support various charities.
Wrapping up the School Year
Wow! The school year flew right by! The month of June was a very busy time for the students. Not only were they working to complete various culminating tasks, but students also spent a lot of time preparing for our end of year concert. During our concert, students presented a play called A Mixed Up Fairy Tale. They took on roles such as Little Bo Peep, Sleeping Beauty, Rumplestilskin, Cinderella, and the Frog Prince. Nobody could say Rumplestilskin’s name and Little Bo Peep could not find her sheep!! The students also enjoyed singing songs and reciting chants to the families, staff, and volunteers of RMH Toronto. They did a fabulous job and the teachers were very proud!!
Following the play, each student was presented with a special award in an area they excelled in this term. An example of some awards presented included Most Improved, Ravenous Reader, and Most Enthusiastic. Congratulations to all of our students! We wish everyone a fun and safe summer holidays.
