The work I'm most proud of

A volunteer's story

“When you know the lows, the highs feel pretty good.”

For Kate Knowles, one of those highs is volunteering as Chair of the Young Professionals Committee (YPC) of RMHC Toronto. Her passion for the charity is deep rooted. When Kate was 10, her 8-year-old sister was diagnosed with cancer. When Kate toured the House in 2012 and saw how well the families here are supported, she knew she wanted to be part of it.

Now, the 32-year-old Service Advisor at Manulife works to raise awareness and funds for RMHC Toronto among other young professionals. As head of the committee, she is overseeing the organization of our 2nd annual House Party at Steam Whistle Brewery on Oct. 8 – a night of dancing, networking, fun and fundraising.

“This age demographic is very social. They want to network and connect with people, and if they can raise money at the same time, that’s an added value,” says Kate. “We hope they will translate into future donors to the House.”

Volunteering on the YPC is a great opportunity to leverage your professional skills for a profound outcome, says Kate.

“You end up getting more out of it than you put in. This is the work I’m most proud of. Anyone who knows me knows about RMHC Toronto.”

A survey this summer showed 98 per cent of volunteers would recommend RMHC Toronto to other volunteers. Click here to learn more about volunteering at RMHC Toronto.
