Beckett's Story

41 day stay

Beckett's mom shares her family's story surrounding the birth of her first child, in her own words.

What circumstance brought you and Beckett to Ronald McDonald House Toronto?
Beckett was born premature at 32 weeks.  He spent a total of 8 weeks at sick kids.

What was Beckett’s medical diagnosis?
He was born with mal rotation of his bowel, and also a partial obstruction in his intestines.  He had two major surgeries.

What would you have done without Ronald McDonald House Toronto?
We would have had to commute from Barrie every day or stayed with friends and family members near the Toronto area.

What surprised you most about Ronald McDonald House Toronto?
I’m not going to lie I was a little nervous at first because it was only $15 a night. I was expecting a lot less. The House is immaculate, it's clean and has great facilities, laundry, kitchen, gym etc.

What kind of impact did Beckett’s diagnosis have on your family emotionally and financially?
Beckett’s diagnosis had both emotional and financial strain on our family. No one ever wants to see their new born baby sick. Every day was a challenge, and words could never describe the pain you feel for your child,  but I’m so thankful for all the support at SickKids and the Ronald McDonald House Toronto.

What did you enjoy most about your stay at Ronald McDonald House Toronto?
One of my favourite memories is having volunteers make us dinner a couple times a week, it was one less stress to worry about.

What would you like to say to those individuals and companies who donate funds to keep the House open and operating?
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your donations. I will forever be thankful for having a place to rest my head at night.

In what ways did your stay at the House impact Beckett’s healing and recovery?
Being able to stay at the House allowed me to spend more time at the hospital. Since it’s only a couple minute walk I didn’t have to waste any time commuting and could be at his bedside.

Anything else you would like to add about your stay at the House?
Thank you to everyone who works/volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House Toronto. You have made our situation a little less stressful with your hard work and positive attitude. It was always so great to come “home” to smiling faces.
