Geeteeta's Family

Geeteeta, was diagnosed with a life-threatening blood disorder when she was just five years old. After seven years of blood transfusions and hospital stays, doctors recommended she have a life-saving stem cell transplant. The place to do it was The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

However, with her home 2,340 kilometers away in Iqaluit, Nunavut, her father, Leevede, did not know what to do. The thought of not being together with his family for an undetermined length of time seemed incomprehensible. And, according to doctors, it wasn’t the best thing for his little girl.

“The doctors said it was important for our entire family to be here to support Geeteeta,” he explained.

Thankfully they got a room at RMH Toronto. Leevede’s entire family, including his wife, Muati, their 12-year-old son, Kevin, and their other two boys, three-year-old, Ilaija, and twoyear- old, Iqqaali, left their small town of 7,000 and moved across the country so they could support Geeteeta and get her the life-saving transplant she needed.

The little boys loved the Play Program and the family attended every Home for Dinner. They were able to visit their daughter every day leading up to, and following, her transplant. Kevin attended the School at RMH Toronto.

The road has been rocky, but being so far from home, they truly appreciated the compassion and support they have received at the House.
